“Beginning a New Year with a Beginner’s Mind.” by Dr. Robert Sterken. 

He is a Professor of Political Science at the University of Texas at Tyler. Sterken is a global soul of sorts who is regularly teaching or learning abroad in places as far flung as Amsterdam, Berlin, Beijing, Chang Mai, Changchun, Prague, Singapore, Saigon, and Siem Reap. He has authored and edited numerous books, articles, and chapters including his most recent book, “Teaching Barefoot in Burma” which shares stories and insights from his year as a Senior Fulbright Scholar at Yangon University where he taught and did research on the Saffron Revolution, religion, and politics. Sterken has spent years of study in monasteries all across Asia learning with Buddhist monks and nuns. He is currently writing about social control and religion and has several chapters forthcoming in 2019/20. He also has a forthcoming piece on Art, Buddhism, and Human Rights. Sterken regularly teaches courses on Religion & Politics, International Relations and Human Rights, and Asian Politics.
